Seoul, South Korea & Phuket, Thailand

Flat Stanley has made it to his 4th continent!  He booked a trip to Seoul, South Korea in Asia with Julie Sanchas.  Julie graduated from Carlynton in 2001.  Stanley even got to enjoy a layover in Moscow, Russia.  Sadly, they could not leave the airport.  After visiting in Seoul, Stanley traveled to Phuket (Poo-ket), Thailand for some fun in the sun!

Here is what Stanley reported back about his adventure to Asia!

Flat Stanley departed John F Kennedy Airport in New York City on December 21, 2012.  He arrived in Moscow, Russia where he had to wait a few hours before taking his next flight to Seoul, South Korea.  When he arrived in Seoul, the temperature was only 8 degrees!  Luckily, Stanley remembered his hat and gloves.  He took the subway from the airport to the Hello Kitty Cafe for lunch.  After lunch, Stanley visited the Gyeongbokgung Palace.  The palace was built in 1395 and housed the King.  Between 1592-1598, the palace was under attack and remained partly destroyed for over 250 years.  Beginning in 1868, the palace started being reconstructed and is still under maintenance.

Also, while in Seoul, Stanley tried the famous "Korean Barbeque" where he was able to cook a meal at his table.  He also visited the Seoul North Tower, which is the highest point in Seoul.  Lastly, he went to the Korea House for a traditional meal and show.

Stanley left South Korea and flew to Phuket, Thailand.  When Stanely arrived, it was 95 degrees!  Stanley spent a few days in the sun dividing his time between the pool and the beach before returning to the United States.

Thank you for taking Stanley on a tour of Asia, Julie!  He had a great time with you!!

Perth, Australia

Flat Stanley had an amazing opportunity to travel around the globe to Perth, Australia to visit with Carlynton Class of 2000 graduate, April Kleer.  April took Flat Stanley on many awesome adventures!  They had so much fun!  Stanley even sent Team Lewis a post card from Perth before Christmas, just to check in!  He did not want us to worry about him!  Rumor has it that he sent us a package, too!

Flat Stanley e-mailed us a journal entry...

G’day!

After a very long trip around the world, I arrived in Perth, Western Australia in October 2012.

Perth is the sunniest capital city of Australia –it gets 3,000 hours of sun every year and the weather is very hot in summer.  One day when I was visiting it was 108 degrees!

Perth has lots of beautiful beaches and very interesting flowers and insects.  It also has really cool animals like kangaroos, black swans and pelicans.  The kangaroos are wild, not in a zoo, and sometimes they are tricky to find. We got lucky though and found some right near the city.  I even got to pose with one for some pictures!

The seasons in Australia are opposite to America because Australia is in the southern hemisphere.  When Pittsburgh has winter, Perth has summer.  Being in the southern hemisphere also means the water in the drain swirls the opposite way too, which was neat to see.   The time is also opposite in Australia. When it’s morning in Pittsburgh, I was going to bed in Perth!  Another opposite thing is the car. The steering wheels in Australian cars are where the passenger sits in America, and the cars drive on the other side of the road too! I had to make sure I looked twice before crossing the street.

Since the weather in Perth is so nice almost all year round, the best things to do are outdoors.  People in Perth love to go surfing, kayaking, running, play sports, swim, go diving, snorkelling and have picnics in the parks.   People also go fishing a lot. One day we drove a few hours south of the city to a town called Busselton. We tried to catch squid off of the jetty, but we didn’t manage to catch anything so we had to eat leftovers for dinner.

In December, I went to Melbourne to celebrate the holidays. Melbourne is on the opposite side of the country, so I flew on an airplane. Melbourne is a much bigger city than Perth.

Christmas was really strange…it was hot! Instead of snow, it was around 90-100 degrees. For Christmas dinner we ate some salad, fish and cold meats.  It was way too hot to bake cookies in the oven!

One day in Melbourne a Yellow-Crested Cockatoo came to the backyard to visit.  My photo with this bird is my favourite picture from the trip – it looks like the cockatoo is smiling at me! The birds here are really big, very colourful and make really funny noises.

The other cool thing about Australia is all of the different words they use.  Everyone speaks English, but sunglasses are called ‘sunnies,’ bathing suits are called ‘bathers,’ cookies are called ‘biscuits’ and people always says ‘g’day’ for hello and use the phrase ‘no worries’ a lot. They also spell a few things differently too - like ‘colour’ for color and ‘tyre’ for tire. Confusing!

Overall I had a great time in Australia - It’s definitely a very interesting place. I’ve included lots of photos from my trip, I hope you enjoy!

Sincerely,

Flat Stanley

Thank you again, April, for showing such wonderful hospitality to Flat Stanley!  Australia is a beautiful continent & we hope we can visit some day!

Italy

Flat Stanley had the pleasure of joining Carlynton School Psychologist, who is also an alum, Dr. Mangis, on a trip to Italy with her family.

Stanley had a beautiful view of Assisi from his hotel room!  What a beautiful sight!

There was even time to stop in Genova for some delicious salami!

Stanley was so hungry one night, he devoured an entire pizza!

Stanley enjoyed sight seeing in Assisi with Dr. Mangis.  The drivers scared him though.  He was glad that he was safe with Dr. Mangis!

Can you believe Dr. Mangis & her family (pictured below) saw Bishop Zubick, from Pittsburgh, in Italy?  He gladly posed with the family for a picture!  Too cool!

Stanley made it to Vatican City!

What is that amazing ancient building back there??  Let's get closer and see!

It is the Colosseum in Rome!  In ancient times, great games, such as gladiator fights, took place here!  It is the largest amphitheatre in the world!  Many people visit the Colosseum daily!

Flat Stanley was excited to see another ancient building, the Pantheon.  It was dedicated in 27 BC.  Since the Renaissance  the Pantheon has been used as a tomb.

Stanley was so happy his traveling buddy, Kennedy, helped lift him up so he would be with the Leaning Tower of Pisa!  The tower is a bell tower and is 183 feet high!  The tower underwent renovations between 1990 and 2001 to fix the lean.  The top of the tower is currently 12 feet 10 inches further than it should be, if it were standing straight.

Here is Kennedy hanging out with her bud, Flat Stanley, in Monaco.

Flat Stanley was amazed by all of the huge yachts in Monaco, too!  Maybe on his next trip to Italy, he will get to rent a yacht!!

Thank you to Dr. Mangis and her family for allowing Flat Stanley to travel with them to Europe!  He had a great time with you!

West Palm Beach Florida

Flat Stanley headed south for the winter, literally.  He traveled to West Palm Beach, Florida to visit with Carlynton Alum Stephen Trbovich (2001).  Stephen is a marine biologist and graciously agreed to take Flat Stanley on a dive!

Here is the first look at Stanley 90 feet under water.  His laminated dive gear sadly wasn't rated for that deep of a dive!  His snorkel & mask began to 'run'.

Stanley got to see a sunken ship.  This is the hull of the Mizpah.  The boat is 185 feet long!

Stanley got to see a Giant Horse Conch!  It was bigger than him!

Stanley was extremely excited to see the juvenile (young) Hawskbill Turtle

Can you find the hidden animal?  Stanley could!

Sadly, this is the last known picture of Stanley.  Stanley swam off with the Atlantic Ocean current.  He may arrive in Europe in a few months?

This is not a glob of chocolate chip cookie dough on the bottom of the ocean, but rather a Sea Cucumber!  How neat?

Stephen enjoyed seeing the beautiful dolphins, he decided he was going to swim with them!

Thank you for taking Flat Stanley on a dive of a life time!  We are sure he had a great time -- wherever he is!  Maybe he is somewhere swimming with the dolphins?
